This was a product design for a prop inspired by an in-game concept of Runescape. The Windmill of Lumbridge, also referred to as Mill Lane Mill, is from the long-running MMORPG Runescape. It’s a key landmark known by all players of Runescape where they learn to make flour. I designed this at Event Prop Hire for Jagex as part of their yearly event called Runefest which celebrates the game and lets players live and breathe Runescape in the real world. This is an exciting event that I have worked on for the past 6 years, helping Event Prop Hire create immersive and compelling game inspired environments with various prop, theming and bespoke build designs.

This was a difficult but energising project which I learnt a lot about working with aluminium truss. With a project manager at EPH, we developed a basic form in truss, then it was my challenge to transform this into the Windmill of Lumbridge. This was made more challenging as I would have to design the product without seeing the assembled truss structure. I have extensive knowledge in print design so I used this, combined with packaging design to inspire my product design process. I designed the whole build to use folded Foamex and timber to create a flatpack solution that would easily slot and screw together, providing a seamless finish. The build had to be assembled by two people within a few hours as part of the larger install for the event. As well as designing the product element of the build, I also created the graphic design and print files to go with. For the final finish of the graphics, I took inspiration from concept design for games, creating rich and whimsical textures. Feedback from the Install and event was amazing. The event featured on the famous gaming site IGN, showing lots of various prop designs I have created at EPH. The video for this is listed below the gallery.
